Coventry City finally have a Premier League win to build on. Tonight, Frank Lampard's side return from the international break against Newcastle United, looking to turn their breakthrough at Nottingham Forest into a first home league victory.
A different starting point for Coventry
The Sky Blues lost their opening four league matches without scoring, conceding ten goals along the way. A 1-0 win at Forest changed that: their first goal, first points and first victory arrived together.
They still begin the evening on three points, but the task now is to build rather than simply get off the mark. Their two home league games so far ended in defeats by Hull City and Brighton, making tonight a chance to give their own supporters the sort of result they enjoyed away before the break.
That does not make the earlier difficulties disappear. Coventry have scored only once in five league games. Finding a way to threaten Newcastle while avoiding another heavy home setback is the immediate challenge.
Newcastle want to carry their response forward
Newcastle have eight points from two wins, two draws and one defeat. Their last league outing was a 2-1 home win over Hull, a response to the 4-1 loss at Leeds earlier that week.
Matthias Jaissle's side have already shown contrasting results away from home: a 2-0 victory at Tottenham followed by that defeat at Elland Road. Coventry will hope the visitors are closer to the latter version tonight; Newcastle will want the control that brought their first away win.
The long pause means neither team can rely on simply picking up where it left off. Both won their last league game. Coventry need another step forward after a difficult opening, while Newcastle have the opportunity to put consecutive wins together.
What matters tonight
For Coventry, the question is whether the Forest win can become more than an isolated result. A first home league victory would make their restart feel very different from the opening weeks.
For Newcastle, this is a chance to build consistency before hosting Aston Villa next. It is not a match either side can afford to treat as a routine return after time away.
