Manchester City's perfect league start meets Liverpool's unbeaten record at Anfield today. City are chasing a sixth straight Premier League win, while Liverpool want something they have not yet managed this season: three points at home.
Unbeaten, but with different returns
City have taken all 15 points from their opening five games. Liverpool have nine from two wins and three draws. Both records are worth protecting, but the difference is clear: Liverpool have avoided defeat without matching City's winning habit.
Andoni Iraola's side drew 2-2 with Nottingham Forest and 0-0 with Fulham in their two home league matches. Their wins came away at Ipswich and Bournemouth, with a 1-0 victory on the south coast their last league outing before the international break.
A first home league win against City would give Liverpool's start a very different feel. Another draw would keep them unbeaten, but leave the wait for that Anfield breakthrough going.
Haaland available, Foden absent
Enzo Maresca has confirmed that Erling Haaland is fit and available for the trip. The striker came off as a precaution during Norway's Nations League defeat by Portugal, but City's manager gave a positive update at Friday's press conference.
Phil Foden will not be available. City say he is still serving the suspension following his sending-off in their league win at Manchester United. Haaland's availability is good news for the visitors, although the starting teams have not yet been announced.
City's winning run faces a fresh test
City's last league match was a 5-3 win over Sunderland. Across their five games they have scored 13 goals and conceded five; Liverpool have scored seven and conceded four. Liverpool will want to turn their tighter defensive record into a result that ends the visitors' run.
There is also an off-field backdrop. City confirmed that they lodged an appeal on 1 October against the Premier League Commission's opinion in the disciplinary case. The club denies the accusations and says proceedings remain ongoing. The appeal is not resolved by anything that happens at Anfield.
On the pitch, the question is straightforward: can Liverpool turn an unbeaten start into their first home league victory, or will City make it six wins from six?
