Manchester City looked beaten inside half an hour in Munich. Beth Mead gave them hope before the break, Carlotta Wamser found a late equaliser and a punishing European opener ended with City taking a point back to Manchester.
City recover from a bruising start
Bayern turned early pressure into a two-goal lead. Giulia Gwinn finished a counter-attack in the 11th minute before Kerstin Casparij diverted a dangerous cross into her own net on 28 minutes.
It was the kind of opening spell that can take a European away match beyond reach. Bayern had not lost any of their previous 15 home matches at this stage of the competition, and City were struggling to settle against the German champions.
Mead changed the mood with the final attack of the first half. Bayern failed to clear Bunny Shaw's initial effort and the summer signing tapped in her first City goal to make it 2-1.
A missed penalty does not stop the fightback
City were given a clear route back into the match after Aoba Fujino was brought down by Bayern goalkeeper Ena Mahmutovic. Shaw took the penalty, but Mahmutovic guessed correctly and made the save.
The miss could have finished City's momentum. Instead, the visitors kept pushing. Mary Fowler, Laura Blindkilde Brown and Grace Clinton came on as City searched for the second goal, and the spaces began to open as both sides tired.
Wamser marks her return to Germany
The equaliser arrived in the 86th minute. Wamser moved into space on the left side of the penalty area and curled a low finish beyond Mahmutovic.
Like Mead, the Germany international was scoring her first goal for City. She did it back in her home country, on her Champions League debut for the club, and at the moment City most needed a calm finish.
Bayern still had late chances to win it, but City held on to complete a comeback that had looked unlikely after the opening half-hour.
Why the point matters
The league phase rewards consistency across six different opponents, so recovering a point from one of the most demanding matches on City's schedule matters. The performance also came with a warning: Bayern's speed and pressure left City chasing the match far too early.
City had won their opening three Women's Super League games before this European opener. It was a different test, and their response after going 2-0 down showed they could stay in the contest even when their best football arrived late.

City return to domestic action at Charlton Athletic on Saturday before welcoming Real Madrid in their next European league-phase match on Thursday 1 October. The point in Munich gives them something to build on; the slow start gives them plenty to correct.
